Star School: the first fully off-grid public school in the country

A congregation's building has the opposite load shape to a school. It fills for a few hours on one or two days and sits mostly empty the rest of the week, while the utility bill keeps arriving. Heating and cooling a sanctuary sized for a full house, then conditioning it again for a midweek group of twelve, is where the money goes.
That pattern favors solar. Weekday production offsets consumption the building barely uses, which under most net metering arrangements carries forward against the Sunday peak. Fellowship halls, kitchens, offices, preschools, and food pantry operations run on weekdays and use it directly.
Paying for it
This is the real obstacle, and it deserves a straight answer rather than an encouraging one. Tax-exempt organizations have historically not been able to use tax credits the way a business does, which is why so much solar marketing aimed at churches and nonprofits ends in a lease or a power purchase agreement rather than ownership.
Mechanisms exist that change this for tax-exempt entities, along with grant programs at the federal, state, utility, and denominational level. Many congregations include electricians, contractors, and engineers willing to donate labor, which changes the economics of a project substantially. Final interconnection on a commercial building still requires a licensed electrician in most jurisdictions, and the design still needs to be right. Battery Storage for Community Facilities
Schools, churches, and community centers are often the building a town falls back on when something goes wrong. Serving that role through an outage takes more than an array, because a grid-tied system shuts down when the utility does.
Battery storage with a grid-interactive inverter keeps selected circuits live. The design question is which ones, and the answer is rarely the whole building. A critical-load panel carrying kitchen refrigeration, heating, lighting in the areas people would gather, restrooms, and communications costs a fraction of backing up everything, and it is the difference between a building that can shelter people and one that cannot. Can our building serve as an emergency shelter during an outage?
Only if the system is designed for it. Grid-tied solar shuts down when the utility does. Sheltering people requires battery storage, a grid-interactive inverter, and a critical-load panel carrying the circuits that matter: refrigeration, heat, lighting, restrooms, and communications. Backing up those alone costs far less than backing up the whole building.
